Flat Ferrocerium Rod: Replacement Ferro Rod
A ferro rod does not need to be round to be useful. Grim's ferrocerium rods are flat on purpose, so they fit cleanly against compact fire tools and take up very little room in a small kit.
Use one as a replacement for a compatible Grim fire tool or carry it by itself with a suitable striker and prepared tinder. Choose Card Size for the Hot Shot Fire Card, Firefly Blade Card, Firefly Saw Card, and Firefly Heat. Choose Dog Tag / Micro / PAK Tool Size for the Hot Shot Dog Tag, Hot Shot Micro Tool, and Hot Shot PAK Tool.
Both sizes are available as a single rod or a 3 pack.
Why a Flat Ferro Rod?
A lot of ferro rods work well but take up more room than they need to. These bars were made flat so they can ride with thin Grim tools, small tins, pouches, and compact fire kits without adding a bulky handle.
The idea is simple: keep a real spark source where space is tight. Replace a worn ferro bar in a compatible Grim tool, keep a spare in your kit, or carry one by itself with a suitable striker and tinder.

Replacement Part or Standalone Fire Starter
These bars were designed as replacement ferrocerium for Grim fire tools, but they do not have to stay inside one. Either size can be carried as a standalone ferro rod in a compact fire kit.
Pair the rod with a suitable striker and properly prepared tinder. The flat shape is especially handy when you are trying to keep a tin, pouch, or pocket fire kit thin instead of building around a bulky handled fire starter.

How to Use a Ferrocerium Rod
Prepare your tinder before making sparks. Hold the ferrocerium rod close to the tinder and use a suitable striker to scrape the rod so the sparks land where you want them.
Once the tinder catches, move that flame into the kindling you prepared before striking. Practice the process before you need it, and only build fires where they are permitted.

A ferro rod handles the spark. A complete fire kit still needs tinder, a striker, and the skills to turn that spark into a flame.
