Ferrocerium Rod

A ferrocerium rod, often called a ferro rod or ferrocerium striker, is a dependable spark maker that throws hot sparks when you scrape it with a metal striker or the spine of a knife. To use it, hold a small nest of tinder ready, press the striker firmly against the rod at a shallow angle, and scrape quickly toward the tinder so the sparks land in the pile. For faster ignition, shave a few magnesium or wood shavings first, then strike; for quick sparks without shaving, scrape harder so hot particles spray into your tinder.
