How to Make a Survival Water Still Using Condensation
In a survival situation, a survival water still is an effective way to turn contaminated, or saltwater into clean, drinkable water. Here's how to distill water using boiling, condensation, and a simple tube system.
Step 1: Gather Your Materials
Set Up the System
- Prepare your fire: Build a fire or use another heat source to boil the water.
- Fill the container: Place the contaminated water into your heatproof container and set it over the fire.
- Connect the tube: Attach one end of the tube to the container, allowing the steam from the boiling water to pass through it. Make sure the tube extends away from the heat, the idea is for the tube to stay as cool as possible to turn the steam, into water droplets.
- Position the collection container: Place the other end of the tube inside the clean container, where the vapor will condense back into liquid.
Start Boiling the Water
As the water in the first container boils, steam will rise and move through the tube. The steam cools and condenses as it travels, turning back into purified water, which collects in the second container.
Collect the Clean Water
Once enough steam has condensed into liquid in the collection container, the water is ready for drinking. Continue the process until you have sufficient water.
