Magnesium Micro Tool: USA Made Fire Starter Bar
A Small Reserve of Hot Burning Magnesium
The Magnesium Micro Tool gives you a compact supply of magnesium for the moment ordinary tinder needs more heat. Scrape a tight pile of fine shavings, place it against dry tinder, and aim sparks from a ferrocerium rod directly into the pile.
Once the shavings catch, magnesium burns hot and bright for a short time. That burst of heat can help stubborn tinder take a flame, but the Micro Tool is not a spark source by itself. Pair it with a ferro rod or another suitable ignition source.
The USA made tool measures about 2 x 0.5 inches and 2 mm thick. It includes one small carry clip, so it can stay on a key ring, zipper pull, pouch, or compact fire kit without taking up useful room.

When Tinder Needs More Heat
A ferro rod makes the spark. Magnesium gives that spark a hotter target.
Scrape the Micro Tool until you have a tight pile of fine, bright magnesium shavings. Put the pile where it touches dry tinder, then direct sparks into the magnesium. When it catches, the bright burst of heat helps transfer fire into the tinder bundle.
The tool is small enough to stay with a fire kit instead of being left with the full size gear. It is not magic, and it does not replace dry tinder or good technique. It is simply a compact way to carry extra heat when the first spark needs help.

The Spark Is Only Half the Fire
A magnesium fire starter works best when the shavings, spark, and tinder are prepared as one system. This section connects the tool to the skill behind it so the small bar is more useful when conditions are less friendly.
The Magnesium Micro Tool provides the fuel. A ferro rod provides the spark. Dry tinder catches the heat. Carry all three, practice before a trip, and use the guide below to understand how the pieces work together.
How to Get Magnesium Shavings to Light
Magnesium works best when the preparation is right.
- Expose bright metal: scrape past any dull outer surface before building the main pile
- Make fine shavings: thin curls and powder catch more easily than thick chips
- Keep the pile tight: scattered shavings lose heat and are harder to ignite
- Use dry tinder: place the magnesium against the tinder so the heat has somewhere useful to go
- Aim the sparks: bring the ferro rod close and direct strong sparks into the center of the pile
Prepare the shavings before striking. Chasing loose magnesium around after the sparks start is a fine way to make a simple job difficult.

Carry, Storage, and Fire Kit Use
Use the included clip to keep the Magnesium Micro Tool on a key ring, zipper pull, pouch, or compact fire kit. Store it where the surface will not rub constantly against other metal and where the shavings can be prepared over a stable surface.
Water does not make the remaining magnesium useless, but wet tinder and wet shavings make fire starting harder. Dry the tool, expose fresh bright metal, and prepare the pile on dry tinder before striking sparks.
The magnesium is consumed a little at a time. Carry the tool as a reserve, practice the process before a trip, and replace it when too little material remains to prepare a useful pile.
Complete the Spark, Heat, and Tinder System
This tool supplies magnesium, not the spark. Pair it with a ferro rod and dependable tinder so all three parts of the fire starting system travel together.

VerifiedThis isn't the first time I've ordered these. I love how small and light weight they are, they fit perfectly in the bill of my WAZOO cache cap and my pocket edc carry bundle.

I bought six of these before trying one. And then another one. I use magnesium shavings to start fires all the time, but these don't work. Even massive sparks won't light them. Great concept, though.
