Hot Shot Micro Tool: Keychain Fire Starter
A Keychain Fire Starter With Its Own Striker
The Hot Shot Micro Tool combines an integrated ferrocerium rod with a blued, spring tempered 1095 high carbon steel body that provides the striker edge.
At about 0.5 inch by 2 inches and 0.060 inch, or about 2 mm, thick, it fits on a key ring, zipper pull, pouch, or compact fire kit without taking up the room of a full size rod and separate striker.
Hold it close to fine, dry tinder and use the steel edge to scrape the ferro rod. Fresh rods have a protective coating, so clear the section you plan to strike before expecting the best shower of sparks.
The Hot Shot is made to be carried and practiced with. Fire still takes prepared tinder and good technique. Even a clever little tool cannot negotiate with a wet pile of leaves.

Why Carry a Keychain Fire Starter?
A fire starter only helps when it is close enough to use. Full size tools are easier to grip, but they are also easier to leave in a drawer.
The Hot Shot Micro Tool puts a ferrocerium rod and its striker into a flat 0.5 inch by 2 inch tool. It can stay on a key ring, zipper pull, pouch, or compact fire kit without taking over the space.
It is small enough to carry every day and real enough to practice with. Tiny gear still expects proper tinder and good technique.
Fire Starter Tool Features
The Hot Shot combines the two pieces needed to throw sparks: a ferrocerium rod and a hard steel striker.
- Integrated ferrocerium rod
- Blued, spring tempered 1095 high carbon steel body
- Steel body provides the striker edge
- About 0.5 inch by 2 inches
- 0.060 inch, or about 2 mm, thick

- Made in the USA
This is a spark tool. Pair it with fine, dry tinder and practice before you count on it.

How to use your hot shot fire starter keychain micro tool
A fire starter keychain is only useful if you know how to use it fast, under stress, and with whatever tinder you can find. That is why Grim Workshop backs the tools with skill guides that teach:
- What the tool is and what it is for
- How to strike a ferrocerium fire starter correctly
- How to prep tinder and build a fire that actually catches
- How to improvise alternatives when you do not have ideal materials
If you are building an everyday carry fire kit, the goal is simple. You want a fire option that stays with you, plus the skills to make it work when conditions are not perfect.
Micro Tool Retention System
Many Micro Tools are designed with Grim Workshop’s Original Reusable Tool Retention System, allowing tools to be removed, used, and returned to their backing for storage. This system ensures every micro multi tool stays organized and reusable so your keychain tools last a lifetime instead of being one-and-done.

Where the Hot Shot Fits
The flat profile lets the Hot Shot ride where a round ferro rod may feel bulky.
- Key ring
- Backpack or jacket zipper pull
- Pocket fire kit
- Vehicle emergency kit
- Small tin or pouch
- Backup fire starter attached to larger gear
Keep dry tinder with it. A spark without prepared tinder is just a very small light show.
Build a Complete Pocket Fire Kit
A dependable fire kit needs three parts: a spark source, tinder, and the skill to bring them together. The Hot Shot supplies sparks. Add protected tinder and a heat booster for a more complete setup.

VerifiedGreat sparks from such a small tool, be careful when lightly oiling the carbon steel as the back won't stay on but remedy is take off the back, oil the carbon steel, wipe off the steel, put back of tool back on and push down and put back in the thing it came in
