Wear this ferro rod necklace on its included 24 inch chain, use the short connector on your keys, or add it to a compact kit. The set includes the dog tag tool, ferro rod, silencer, both carry connectors, reusable retention component, information card and sleeve.
Bring your own dry tinder and firewood. This is a useful backup spark source, not a complete tinder and fuel kit. Practice in a safe place where fires are permitted.

That matters because a tool is only half the equation. The other half is knowing how to use it when your hands are cold, the wind is not helping, and your fire prep looks like a sad little bird nest that gave up on life.

How to Use the Hot Shot Ferro Rod Necklace
The ferrocerium rod is the spark source. Prepare the tinder first, then use the striker edge on the steel dog tag body to direct sparks into it.
- Choose a safe location where fires are allowed and keep water nearby.
- Gather a small nest of dry, fine tinder and some thin kindling.
- Hold the ferrocerium rod close to the tinder and scrape it firmly with the steel striker edge.
- Guide the sparks into the tinder. Once it catches, add small kindling gradually.
Use the small saw edge for light tinder preparation, such as roughing up dry wood or bark. It does not replace a full sized saw.
A ferro rod may make sparks in wet weather, but damp tinder may still refuse to catch. Practice with your own dry tinder before you rely on a fire kit outdoors.
How This Dog Tag Fits into a Real Fire Kit
Think of a reliable fire kit as three parts: something to make a spark or flame, dry tinder that catches, and fuel that keeps it burning. The Hot Shot Dog Tag handles the spark and helps with light tinder preparation.
Wear the included chain so the tool stays with you, or use the short connector on keys or a compact pouch. Add tinder and a backup source to a small tin or pack when you want a complete fire kit.
The steel body is 1095 high carbon steel, not stainless steel. Wipe it dry after wet use to help prevent rust. The ferrocerium rod gradually wears as you make sparks, so inspect it before heading out.
The Hot Shot Dog Tag uses ferrocerium, not a magnesium bar. A separate Magnesium Dog Tag can provide tinder shavings, but it is not included.
