This magnesium necklace comes with a 24 inch ball chain, a short keychain connector, a silencer, an information card, and a sleeve. The magnesium body is a consumable tool, not a steel striker. You need a separate ferrocerium rod, match, or lighter to ignite the shavings, plus tinder and kindling.

When dry tinder is hard to light, magnesium can add a quick burst of heat. Shave a little from the dog tag, add a spark, and use the brief burn to help your prepared tinder catch.
The Magnesium Dog Tag takes that fire starting material out of a big rectangular block and puts it into a thin shape you can wear on a chain, clip to your keys, or tuck in a small fire kit. Carry the material you need without making another bulky item to pack.
Magnesium does not make sparks on its own. You will need a separate ignition source, such as the Hot Shot Dog Tag with its ferrocerium rod, plus tinder and small kindling. This tool adds fuel, not the spark.
What Comes with the Magnesium Dog Tag?
The Magnesium Dog Tag is a flat fire starting material you carry with the hardware needed to wear or attach it. The recorded parts are:
- A magnesium dog tag body about 2 mm thick
- A 24 inch aluminum ball chain necklace with connector
- A separate short 4.5 inch keychain connector chain
- A silicone dog tag silencer
- An information card and protective sleeve
This magnesium tool is gradually used up as you shave material from it. The set does not include a ferrocerium rod, striker, lighter, tinder, storage tin, or reusable Tool Retention System. Bring the spark source and tinder you plan to use.

How to Start a Fire with Magnesium Shavings
Magnesium is not a substitute for building a good tinder bundle. Start with small, dry material. Keep the magnesium shavings close enough to it that the hot burn can transfer to the tinder.
- Choose a clear outdoor area where fires are permitted and prepare dry tinder and small kindling.
- Use a suitable separate scraper or sharp tool to make a small pile of fine magnesium shavings onto or beside your tinder.
- With a separate ferrocerium rod or other ignition source, direct sparks into the shavings.
- When the shavings catch, let the tinder take the heat and carefully feed the fire with small kindling.
Fine shavings are easier to light than a solid bar. Wind can scatter them, and a magnesium flame burns very hot. Keep the burning material away from your hands, clothing, and extra gear. Follow local fire restrictions.
Size, Carry Options, and Care
The magnesium body is about 2 mm thick, per the current Grim Inventory record. Its dog tag shape makes it easy to keep alongside other small tools. The included 24 inch chain is for necklace carry, and the short 4.5 inch chain can be used for a keychain setup.
A silicone silencer helps keep the dog tag from rattling against other gear. Use a dry place for storage. Magnesium shavings are small and easy to scatter, so make only what you need for your immediate fire and keep leftover gear away from sparks.
Each time you scrape the body, you use some of its magnesium. It is a consumable fire starting material, not a removable steel blade or a reusable Tool Retention System tool. There is no verified number of fires per tag.
