DIY Customization Methods for Altoids Tin Survival and EDC Kits

Altoids tin survival kits are not only practical due to their compact size but also offer a wide range of customization options. Whether you're looking to waterproof your kit, add external storage, or even modify the tin itself into a multifunctional tool, there are numerous ways to enhance its utility. Here are various DIY and customization methods for Altoids tin survival and everyday carry (EDC) kits, helping you make the most of this versatile little container.

1. Waterproofing Your Altoids Tin Kit

Seal the Edges with Electrical Tape:
One of the simplest methods for waterproofing your Altoids tin kit is to wrap the edges with electrical tape. This not only helps to keep water out but also provides you with some extra tape in case you need it for repairs or other tasks.

Use a Small Waterproof Bag:
If all else fails, place the entire Altoids tin inside a small waterproof bag. Not as ideal for pocket carry, but still perfectly doable in a backpack. This method provides an additional layer of protection against moisture, ensuring that your survival gear stays dry.

2. Adding External Storage with the Grim Workshop Bandit

The Bandit Wrap:
Grim Workshop offers a product called the Bandit, which is a versatile elastic band that can be wrapped around your Altoids tin. The Bandit allows you to securely attach extra items to the outside of your tin, such as a small flashlight, lighter, or additional tools. This not only expands the carrying capacity of your tin but also keeps frequently used items easily accessible without having to open the kit.

Integrated Tool Holders:
The Bandit can also be used to hold Grim Workshop's Dog Tag Tools or Micro Tools, providing quick access to these essential items. By combining internal and external storage options, you can create a more comprehensive and organized survival kit.

3. Modifying the Tin into a Small Stove

Altoids Tin Stove:
One popular modification is turning the Altoids tin into a small stove. To do this, you'll need to punch a few holes in the sides of the tin using a nail or small drill bit. These holes provide ventilation, allowing the flames to breathe. You can then place a small fuel tablet or solid alcohol inside the tin, light it, and use the open lid as a cooking surface. This DIY stove is perfect for boiling water or cooking small amounts of food in a survival situation.

Windshield and Support:
For added stability and wind resistance, you can create a small windshield out of aluminum foil or use the lid of the tin as a support to balance a small pot or cup on top of the stove.

4. Creating a Candle or Lantern

Altoids Tin Candle:
To create a candle, simply punch a small hole in the top of your tin sized to fit your wick, fill the Altoids tin with wax (beeswax or paraffin) oil, or other fuel, and insert a wick. This DIY candle can provide light and heat in an emergency. To make it more versatile, you can create multiple wicks, allowing you to control the amount of light and heat produced, by exposing more, or less wicks.

Altoids Tin Lantern:
You can also turn the tin into a makeshift lantern by placing a tea light candle inside and propping the lid open slightly. The reflective inner surface of the tin will help to amplify and direct the light, making it more effective for illuminating your surroundings.

5. Using the Tin as a Reflector, Cooking Container, or Water Holder

Signal Reflector:
The shiny inner surface of an Altoids tin can be used as a makeshift signal reflector. In an emergency, you can use the tin to reflect sunlight and signal for help. Simply angle the tin towards the sun and reflect the light towards a rescue team or passing aircraft.

Cooking Container:
The metal construction of the Altoids tin allows it to be used as a small cooking container. You can boil water, heat food, or even use it as a frying pan in a pinch. Just be sure to use the tin over a low flame or coals to avoid damaging it. This is when having a slightly larger tin can really come in handy, so if you ever create a tin for cooking items, consider making it slightly larger so it can actually hold a measurable amount of food, or water for you.

Water Holder:
In a survival situation, the Altoids tin can hold small amounts of water. This can be useful for collecting rainwater, melting snow, or holding purified water before drinking. While it won't hold a large volume, every bit counts when water is scarce and a cup is not available.

6. Additional Modifications and Uses

Personalization:
Finally, don't forget to personalize your Altoids tin. You can paint or decorate the outside, add stickers, or label it with its contents to help differentiate it from other kits you might be carrying. Personalization not only makes your kit unique but also helps you quickly identify it in an emergency. Consider leaving an urban survival kit in it's standard mint tin, so as to conceal it's contents if it's intended as an escape and evasion kit.
