Gig Dog Tag: Frog Gig and Fish Spear Survival Necklace

    $9.50

A good survival tool gives you more than one way to solve a problem. The Gig Dog Tag gives you three ways to work on one of the oldest problems around: finding food.

The main tool is a barbed, multi pronged gig that can be lashed to a sturdy pole for frog gigging or used as a compact fish spear. The same 1 x 2 inch stainless steel frame also holds a small game arrowhead and one double sided fishing hook.

Wear it as a survival necklace, clip it to a keychain, or keep it in a small fishing or emergency kit. It stores the hard to improvise metal parts in a space about the size of a standard dog tag. You supply the pole, line, bait, and most important of all, the practice.

A Food Procurement Kit You Can Wear

Most food gathering gear is too large to carry every day. Spears need long shafts. Fishing kits need line and bait. Arrows need wooden shafts. Those parts can be packed separately or made from field materials, but the strong metal points are much harder to improvise.

That is the idea behind the Gig Dog Tag. It keeps a compact gig, arrowhead, and fishing hook together in a necklace size tool that can stay with you long after a larger kit gets left at home.

The gig is the main event. Its multiple barbed points give you a wider working head than a single spear point and help hold a catch after contact. The arrowhead and fishing hook add two more food procurement options without making the tool larger.

Carry the Hard Part. Build the Rest.

A straight pole is easy to picture, but awkward to carry. A sharp steel gig head is easy to carry, but much harder to make from scratch. The Gig Dog Tag solves that problem by letting the metal part ride flat until it is needed.

Remove the gig and lash it firmly to the end of a sturdy pole. Once attached, it becomes a compact frog gig or fish spear for shallow water use where local laws allow. The gig still takes patience, careful aim, and practice. Flat gear is clever, but it cannot practice for you.

The included arrowhead follows the same idea. Lash it to a prepared wooden shaft for a primitive arrow or small spear. It is designed for field made wooden shafts, not as a drop in point for modern arrows.

The double sided fishing hook gives you a third option. Pair it with suitable fishing line, a secure knot, and natural bait or a small lure to build a simple fishing setup.

How to Use the Gig Dog Tag

    Using the Gig

Remove the gig from the dog tag frame. Choose a straight, sturdy pole and lash the gig securely to one end with strong cordage, tape, or line. Test the attachment before field use. Use it only where frog or fish gigging is legal and only when you can clearly identify the target.

    Using the Arrowhead

Remove the arrowhead and lash it to a prepared wooden shaft. Use tight wraps and test the attachment before use. This point is intended for a field made primitive arrow or small spear. It does not use the attachment system found on modern arrows.

    Using the Fishing Hook

Tie suitable fishing line to the double sided hook with a secure fishing knot. Add bait or build a simple lure based on the water and fish you are targeting. Check the hook, line, and local fishing rules before use.

    Returning the Tools

After use, wash the tool, dry it fully, and return it to the dog tag frame. Grim's reusable Tool Retention System lets you remove a flat tool, use it, and put it back instead of treating the tag as a one use kit.
